Pray like you never worked. Work like you never prayed.
You hear of Christians talking about ‘waiting on God’ or ‘waiting for God’ to do something they’ve been praying about. When eventually these requests do happen, we say a miracle has taken place. Hallelujah!
The problem with waiting on or for God though, is that it has been abused. You see, waiting on/for God used to be something that was active and full of life. Now, it has become something passive and a glorified form of inactivity. It used to be that back then, the people who waited for or on God got busy carrying out their daily responsibilities and then God showed up. What we have nowadays are people sitting on their lazy butts waiting for God to do something that they should otherwise have done.
Maybe it’s a problem with theology – the way preachers, over the years, in a bid to win more souls have painted a picture of God as the magician father who suddenly transforms people’s lives for good once they accept him. Come to Jesus and all your suffering will end. God’s miraculous power will change your life, just accept him and you will see changes. And thus Christendom began to be populated by people who were primed to be on autopilot while God takes control of their lives. Nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus did promise persecutions (and eventual salvation) – he didn’t say come to me and I will do everything for you.
So back to my point, waiting on God isn’t waiting for God to carry out all the activities while you take a nap. It’s simply trusting that God will work all things together for your good. It’s you refusing to give in to a lifeline that doesn’t glorify God and defile your conscience, even when it seems to be the only way out. It’s you trusting that God will come through for you.
It however is not you sleeping in your house praying every day for a miraculous job that you did not attempt to apply for. It is not hoping ceaselessly for a husband to appear at your doorstep while you just stay holed up in your apartment not interacting with people. It is not waiting for the mysterious angel to drop by your house with the money you need when you could have gotten a financial education.
Wake up bro! God isn’t going to type your CV for you. He isn’t going to woo that girl you’ve been eyeing. And no, He is not going to learn that business skill on your behalf. You got to get up and keep moving. You’ve prayed and fasted, now it’s time to work! Do your best and let God meet you halfway. When it’s time God himself will locate you. But till then, rise up and work.
