As a young entrepreneur who is looking to roll with the big boys (and girls), you are probably hungry for tips and tricks on how to break out in the market place of your dreams. One sure way to attract and retain customers is by providing quality customer service – which is the essence of this article. So I’ll get straight to the point with the insights I got from Adamu on how to do customer service the Nigerian way. But who is Adamu? He is a sales genius and a customer service expert. You’ve got to give it to him. His tactic flies in the face of anything either the Wall Street or Harvard Business Review has ever seen. His sales philosophy is very simple – ‘sell ice to the Eskimos’ and ‘sell groundnuts to the northerners’. Whether you agree with him or not, the guy is making cool cash so you better listen when he speaks sells. Now let’s get to the point.
The first thing you should know is that you must stock limited quantities of what your customers love.After all, you’re the expert and you know your customers more than they do themselves. If they knew what they wanted, they wouldn’t have come to you in the first place. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready for the second step. Stock your shop with excess quantities of what your customers don’t like. Your customers don’t have a choice in this matter. They’ll have to buy whatever they find. For example, if they love the Gala brand of beef sausages, stock up with the Chi brand instead. If your customers love imported loafers, why not present to them a locally made brand of leather sandals? Frankly speaking, I can’t think of a better way to prove that you have superior knowledge of your customers than this approach.
What do you do when your customers complain about the lack of their favorite brand?Simply frown and tell them that it is currently unavailable in the market.This usually does the trick. Your customers won’t bother you with their silly, childish whines anymore. Come to think of it, it’s bad manners to complain right?
After you’ve done all these, what next? It’s simple:Sit back, relax and watch customers buy up your stock… then repeat the process all over.
